Revitalizing Education: Henry Sy Foundation's Collaborative Transformation of the Philippine School for the Deaf
In a remarkable collaboration aimed at championing inclusivity in education, the Henry Sy Foundation, alongside the SM Foundation and the Department of Education, embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize the Philippine School for the Deaf (PSD) in Pasay City. Through their collective efforts, they breathed new life into the school's infrastructure, ensuring that differently-abled students have access to enhanced learning environments conducive to their needs.
Through social good collaboration, the laboratory for baking and cookery has been equipped with new tools and furniture, helping conduct more hands-on classes.
A Legacy of Empowerment
For over a century, the PSD has served as a beacon of hope and empowerment for the deaf community in the Philippines. Despite its rich legacy, the school faced numerous infrastructural challenges that hindered its ability to provide quality education and support services to its students. From dilapidated classrooms to accessibility issues, the school was in dire need of revitalization to continue fulfilling its mission of empowering individuals with diverse abilities.
Transformative Partnership
Recognizing the importance of inclusive education, the Henry Sy Foundation, SM Foundation, and the Department of Education's Schools Division Office of Pasay City came together in a transformative partnership to address the pressing needs of the PSD. Through the DepEd's adopt-a-school program, the collaborative effort sought to create a more conducive learning environment that caters to the unique needs of differently-abled students.
Revitalizing Infrastructure, Transforming Lives
The revitalization efforts focused on refurbishing the school's Senior High School building and a four-story, 12-classroom structure, addressing issues ranging from basic facilities to accessibility features. The transformation included the installation of ramps and railings throughout the campus, ensuring ease of movement for all students, regardless of their physical abilities.
Enhanced Learning Spaces
The refurbished facilities now boast enhanced learning spaces dedicated to various subjects, including vocational training in areas such as dressmaking, beauty care, cookery, and electronics. From a state-of-the-art dance studio to well-equipped laboratories, the school now offers students a range of opportunities to explore their interests and talents in a supportive environment.
Promoting Hygiene and Well-being
In addition to addressing infrastructural challenges, the revitalization project prioritized the promotion of hygiene and well-being among students. Clean and functional toilets, equipped with PWD-friendly facilities, were rehabilitated to ensure that students have access to safe and sanitary facilities conducive to their needs.
A Commitment to Inclusivity
The rehabilitation of the PSD stands as a testament to the SM and Henry Sy Foundations' unwavering commitment to inclusivity and empowerment through education. By revitalizing the school's infrastructure and creating a supportive learning environment, the collaborative effort aims to empower differently-abled individuals to reach their full potential and thrive in an inclusive society.
As the PSD continues its journey of transformation, guided by the values of empowerment and inclusivity, it serves as a shining example of how collective action can create positive change and transform lives for generations to come.
